The Hartog Way

Start with fibre. Complete with care

  • Fibre, always available

Roughage products form the base of every ration, day and night.

  • Add what is needed

Balancers and concentrates add the vitamins, minerals and energy your horse needs on top of that.

  • Complete with care

A topping, such as an oil or a supplement, adds extras only where your horse needs it.

How much horsefeed should I feed?

For tips, tricks, and advice about horse feed, you can find more information on our website.

Would you like personal advice? Then fill out our feeding form! After submitting the form, we’ll contact you within 5 working days. Do you have a problem that can’t wait? You can reach us by phone on weekdays between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM at +31 (0)229 58 1232. We’re happy to help!

How many hours a day should a horse be eating?

Ideally your horse is eating for at least 12 hours a day. Horses produce stomach acid continuously, and chewing produces the saliva that buffers it. Spreading roughage over the day, or slowing intake with a roughage mix, keeps that rhythm going.

How much water is in hay, haylage and fresh grass?

Fresh grass is about 85% water, dry hay about 15%. So a horse has to eat far more kilos of fresh grass to get the same amount of dry matter. A roughage analysis tells you the dry matter content of your own batch.

Does my horse need a concentrate feed?

Not every horse does. Horses in hard work, pregnant mares and lactating mares may need more than roughage alone provides. Horses in light work are often fine on roughage with a balancer for vitamins and minerals.

How do I switch my horse to a new feed safely?

It’s important that your horse’s diet remains consistent in quality. That’s why we recommend keeping sudden changes in feed to a minimum.

Do you buy your forage in small batches? If so, make sure the forage comes from the same farmer or the same field to keep changes to a minimum.

If you’re changing your horse’s feed, we recommend doing so gradually. Allow a few days to a few weeks to slowly adjust the diet. This way, both your horse and its digestive system can get used to the new feed.
