We recommend feeding at least 1.5% of the body weight in dry matter (DM) as a replacement for the forage ration.

In addition to providing enough water.

  • Free from grains, molasses, and alfalfa
  • 100% dried grass without additives
  • Compactly compressed, requiring less storage space (ideal for transport)
  • Suitable for dust-sensitive horses.

Good roughage is the base of every ration, and consistent roughage makes feeding easier. Hartog Compact Grass comes from controlled cultivation with partner farmers, is dried to Hartog specifications instead of in the field, then sieved and pressed into wrapped bales. Drying it this way keeps more of the taste and aroma, which picky eaters notice. Because the grass is chopped, it also suits horses with a reduced chewing ability. Use it to replace part or all of your horse’s roughage.

Hartog Compact Grass comes in a wrapped 18 kg bales that take little storage space and is easy to move. Feed it like hay, so always available at sufficient amounts, and complete the ration with a balancer such as Hartog Essential. Switching from hay? Mix the two for a while so your horse can get used to it.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the advantage of this product compared to 'regular' hay or haylage?

Because this product is dried in a drying drum to Hartog specifications, instead of for several days in the field, it preserves the nutrients in the product better. Artificial drying not only conserves nutrients but also results in a pleasant odor and taste.

Artificial drying leads to a very consistent quality, which can be beneficial for horses with sensitive lungs or a sensitive digestive system.

How long will it take my horse to finish one compact bale?

A horse should consume at least 1.5 kg of dry matter roughage per 100 kg body weight daily. A bale of this product weighs about 18 kg, a 600 kg horse, depending on its other rations, will get about two days with a bale of Hartog Compact Grass. Roughage should always be available, so plan bales so your horse never runs out.

Can I feed Hartog Compact Grass to my horse with a dust allergy?

Yes! In many cases, horses don't react to the leaf material (dust) itself but to the molds and bacteria present in the leaf material of hay or pre-dried forage. Because Compact Grass is artificially dried, these molds and bacteria are not present in the leaf material. This is why many horses with sensitive lungs respond very well to artificially dried roughage.
