That depends on the dry matter in the roughage: its weight without water. A horse needs at least 1.5 kg of dry matter from roughage per 100 kg of body weight, and ideally has roughage available around the clock. For a 600 kg horse, 9 kg of dry matter equals about 60 kg of fresh grass, 15 kg of haylage or 10.5 kg of hay. Because roughage is a natural product, the dry matter content can vary from these averages.
Not every horse does. A horse that works hard, or a mare that is in foal or feeding a foal, may need more energy than roughage alone provides. In that case, a concentrate feed such as Hartog Daily or Hartog Balance can complete the ration. Not sure? Request free personal feeding advice.
It’s best not to. A ration of consistent quality is important, so keep sudden changes to a minimum. If you buy hay or haylage in small lots, try to get it from the same farmer or the same field. When you do switch, take a few days to a few weeks to change the ration gradually, so your horse’s digestion can get used to the new feed.
