WHY Hartog Lucerne Plus

Hartog Lucerne Plus is lucerne, also called alfalfa, enriched with linseed oil. No grains, no molasses, no soy and low in sugar. That makes it a fit for horses that need to watch their sugar intake, and for sport and leisure horses that benefit from extra good-quality protein. The long fibres keep your horse chewing, and the linseed oil adds omega-3 fatty acids and slow-release energy from fat instead of starch.

What makes lucerne valuable for horses?

Lucerne is a legume. Compared to grass hay it usually contains more protein and much more calcium. Its protein supplies the amino acids a horse uses to build and maintain muscle. The stalks provide structure, the leaves most of the nutrients.

Which horses is Hartog Lucerne Plus suited for?

  • Horses that are sensitive to sugar and starch, because the recipe has no grains, molasses or soy.
  • Sport and leisure horses that need extra protein for muscle development and recovery after training.
  • Owners who want a dust-free roughage mix that follows the horse's natural way of eating.

Why linseed oil?

Linseed oil is a natural source of omega-3 fatty acids. Energy from fat is released slowly, so it does not make horses lively the way starch can.

What can I combine it with?

All Hartog concentrates, the balancer Hartog Essential and Hartog Comfort. Use one lucerne product per ration, so not together with Hartog Lucerne Pellets or Hartog Lucerne Mix. Roughage stays the base and should always be available in sufficient amounts.

Hartog Lucerne Plus comes in 15 kg bags. Mix it through the balancer or concentrate to make each meal last longer, or feed it on its own between roughage meals. The feed calculator on this page gives a starting amount.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between Hartog Lucerne Mix and Hartog Lucerne Plus?

Hartog Lucerne Mix and Hartog Lucerne Plus are both premium forage mixes that are rich in fiber and protein. Both products are free from starch and low in sugar, making them suitable for a wide range of horses. In addition, both Hartog Lucerne Mix and Hartog Lucerne Plus are completely grain-free.

The main difference between the two products lies in the added ingredients. Hartog Lucerne Mix is made with molasses, while Hartog Lucerne Plus is made with linseed oil. This means that Hartog Lucerne Mix may be more palatable for some horses.

Linseed oil is a natural source of omega-3 fatty acids, which contribute to a healthy, shiny coat and overall condition. This makes Hartog Lucerne Plus a great choice for horse owners looking for a completely molasses-free product.

What are the benefits of linseed oil in Hartog Lucerne Plus?

Linseed oil offers several benefits for horses. It is a natural source of omega-3 fatty acids, which support overall equine health, including promoting a shiny and healthy coat.

Linseed oil also provides energy without causing hyperactivity or “hot” behavior in horses, making it a source of slow-releasing energy.

Why should I feed alfalfa to my horse?

There are several reasons to feed alfalfa to your horse. When given alongside concentrates, alfalfa increases the time your horse spends eating. Its fibrous structure encourages chewing and saliva production, which in turn supports healthy digestion. Improved chewing also enhances the absorption of nutrients from the concentrate feed.

Alfalfa is naturally rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals, making it a valuable addition to the diet of horses with increased nutritional needs, such as sport horses, or horses with a sensitive stomach. Due to its high fiber content, Hartog Lucerne Plus also serves as a source of slow-releasing energy, helping to fuel your horse without making it nervous or “hot.”
