To prevent Jacobaea vulgaris in the feed of cattle and horses, it is important to recognize the plant and distinguish it from other yellow flowering plants.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

RIKILT, part of Wageningen UR, has developed a program that identifies yellow flowering plants by giving answers to a number of questions. Determination<\/h2>\n

Do <\/span>you<\/span> want <\/span>to<\/span> have <\/span>Jacobaea<\/span> vulgaris in <\/span>your<\/span> pasture<\/span> or do <\/span>you<\/span> want <\/span>to<\/span> recognize<\/span> the<\/span> plant <\/span>better<\/span>? <\/span>By<\/span> identifying<\/span> all<\/span> parts<\/span> of <\/span>the<\/span> plant <\/span>you<\/span> can<\/span> check <\/span>if<\/span> you<\/span> are <\/span>dealing<\/span> with<\/span> this<\/span> poisonous<\/span> herb<\/span> or <\/span>that<\/span> it<\/span> may<\/span> be<\/span> a different plant.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

General<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

In <\/span>the<\/span> first <\/span>year<\/span>, <\/span>the<\/span> plant <\/span>forms<\/span> an<\/span> unobtrusive<\/span> rosette<\/span>, <\/span>which<\/span> often<\/span> causes<\/span> young<\/span> plants<\/span> to<\/span> be<\/span> overlooked<\/span>. In <\/span>the<\/span> second <\/span>year<\/span> most <\/span>plants<\/span> bloom<\/span>, put <\/span>seeds<\/span> and<\/span> die. The stem of <\/span>Jacobaea<\/span> vulgaris is <\/span>usually<\/span> a <\/span>little<\/span> purple<\/span> in <\/span>color<\/span>. The “kale-like” <\/span>lobed<\/span> leaves<\/span> are <\/span>dark<\/span> green <\/span>and<\/span> at <\/span>the<\/span> bottom<\/span> are a bit <\/span>witty<\/span> in <\/span>color<\/span>. <\/span>Where<\/span> the<\/span> plant does <\/span>not<\/span> bleed<\/span> (e.g., <\/span>by<\/span> mowing<\/span> or <\/span>grazing<\/span>), <\/span>the<\/span> plants<\/span> are present in <\/span>the<\/span> vegetation<\/span> as <\/span>rosette<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>shape<\/span> of <\/span>the<\/span> leaf<\/span> can<\/span> be<\/span> elongated<\/span> (<\/span>left<\/span>), <\/span>oval<\/span> (center) <\/span>and<\/span> round<\/span> (right). The <\/span>leaves<\/span> of <\/span>Jacobaea<\/span> vulgaris <\/span>and<\/span> some<\/span> relatives<\/span> have <\/span>an<\/span> oval<\/span> leaf<\/span> blade<\/span> along<\/span> the<\/span> outer<\/span> edge<\/span>, as <\/span>seen<\/span> in <\/span>the<\/span> second <\/span>leaf<\/span> (<\/span>middle<\/span>).<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
