Hartog Extra Care

True shine comes from within. Hartog Extra Care has been developed to support hooves, mane and coat from within. For horses that need to look their very best and for horses that could use some extra support to regain their natural appearance: a deeper coat colour, a full mane and tail, and strong hoof horn.

Hartog Extra Care is a tasty pellet made from lucerne and linseed, naturally low in sugar and starch. Enriched with biotin, organically bound trace elements, omega-3 fatty acids and carefully selected herbal extracts. It can be fed on its own or used as a tasty topping over the ration, without the hassle of powders and oils.

A shiny coat, strong hooves and a beautiful mane all start from the inside. Good nutrition plays a key role in this. Are your horse’s coat, mane or hooves dull, dry or brittle? If so, this may be a sign that your horse could do with some extra support from the inside. Hartog Extra Care supplements the ration exactly where extra support may be needed. Good-quality forage always remains the foundation; Hartog Extra Care is a supplement, not a replacement.

What is in Hartog Extra Care, and why?

Linseed for omega-3 fatty acids. Linseed is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids and is known for its beneficial effect on the skin and coat. These fatty acids support the skin’s natural barrier function and help keep it supple, including in horses with dry or flaky skin. Fatty acids also play a role in hoof horn quality.

Biotin, in an amount that makes a difference. Biotin is an essential B vitamin known for its role in the quality of hoof horn, skin, mane and tail. At the recommended feeding rate, a 600 kg horse receives approximately 20 mg of biotin per day from Hartog Extra Care. This is the amount commonly used in research into hoof horn quality. Organically bound trace elements. Hartog Extra Care contains organically bound zinc, copper and manganese. These trace elements support the action of biotin and play a role in skin condition, a rich coat colour and the formation of strong hoof horn.

Herbal extracts from turmeric, fennel and fenugreek. The herbal blend in Hartog Extra Care does not consist of whole herbs, but of active plant compounds that have been isolated from them: flavonoids, saponins, antioxidants and polyphenols. These have been carefully combined so that they complement one another and together support the hooves, mane and coat.

Alfalfa as the base. Alfalfa naturally provides more amino acids and fibre than grass. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and therefore of hair and hoof horn. The alfalfa also gives Hartog Extra Care its natural green colour.

Which horses is it suitable for?

Product FAQ's

When should I feed Hartog Extra Care?
Extra Care is intended for horses that could benefit from additional support for the skin, coat and hooves. It can be fed long term or during periods when more is asked of the horse. For example, during moulting, the show and competition season, with a dull coat or brittle hoof horn, for senior horses, or when you want to specifically supplement the daily ration.
How does Extra Care support the coat, mane, tail and hooves?
By combining four key components in one pellet: biotin at a level considered effective in research, herbal extracts of fennel, fenugreek and turmeric, linseed as a source of omega-3 fatty acids, and organically bound trace elements that support the action of biotin. Lucerne and linseed also provide amino acids, the building blocks of skin, hair and hoof horn.
Can I feed Extra Care all year round?
Yes. Extra Care can be fed long term as part of the daily ration, or during periods when extra support is beneficial, such as during moulting or the competition season.
Can I combine Extra Care with any type of feed?
Yes. Extra Care is a fibre-rich supplement and can be combined with any type of concentrate or balancer. It is not a complete feed, but a supplement to the daily ration.
My sport horse could use some extra condition. Is Extra Care suitable?
Yes. In addition to supporting the skin, coat and hooves, Extra Care is a concentrated source of oil and protein. Thanks to its naturally low sugar and starch content, it is also suitable for nervous and sugar-sensitive horses.
Why herbal extracts instead of whole herbs?
The main advantage is that you can provide a carefully balanced blend of active compounds derived from a wide range of herbs, selected for their proven synergistic effects. In addition, scientific knowledge is available on how these compounds work and how effective they are, allowing for a more targeted and effective approach.
Synergy refers to the interaction between two or more substances that results in a greater combined effect than the sum of their individual effects. This means that combining different herbal extracts is often more effective than administering each herb separately. As a result, the use of herbal extracts can be not only more effective, but also more consistent and efficient for the horse. Different herbs can complement and reinforce each other, providing broader nutritional support.
When can you expect to see results?
The coat and hoof horn do not grow at the same rate. It’s a good idea to bear this in mind beforehand.
Coat and condition. With consistent feeding, more shine and a more even coat are often visible after a few weeks. In the test group, most owners reported the first visible changes in the coat after two to four weeks.
Hooves. Hoof horn grows approximately 6 to 10 mm per month. This means it takes almost a year for a hoof to grow from the coronary band to the weight-bearing edge. What you feed today will be reflected in the hoof horn that grows over the coming months. Allow around six to nine months before a visible difference can be seen in the hoof.
Give Extra Care time to work.
