The amount of roughage your horse needs depends on the dry matter content in the roughage. This is the weight of the product without water. A horse needs at least 1.5 kilograms of dry matter from forage per 100 kilograms of body weight for a properly functioning digestive system.

Because forage is a natural product, the dry matter percentage can always vary from the average.

Example of forage requirement for 600 kg horse

9 kg of dry matter equals:

Grass

60 kg

Silage

15 kg

Hay

10,5 kg

Not every horse needs concentrate, but if your horse does a lot of work, is pregnant or lactating, it may need to supplement its energy needs with concentrate.

At Hartog you will find various concentrate feeds that are ideal to supplement roughage rations. Take a look, for example, at Hartog Balance, Hartog Condition or Hartog Strength.

It is important that your horse’s ration be of consistent quality. Therefore, we recommend keeping sudden changes in feed to a minimum.

Do you buy forage in small lots? Then make sure the roughage comes from the same farmer or the same piece of land to minimize changes.

If your horse’s feed changes we recommend that you do so gradually. Set aside a few days to weeks to slowly change the ration. This way your horse, as well as the digestive system, can get used to the new feed.
