Curing a Horse’s Stall Allergy

Your horse may develop bronchitis and asthma due to stall allergy. However, many treatments are possible in which the elimination of stimulants should be in the first place. But the most important thing is of course: right, the stable climate!

Medicine for treating a stall allergy

Some medicines that help with allergy in horses are: Ventilulmin, Sputolysin, Acetylcysteine, Phenegritic, Dampo, Eucalyptus Oil, Hoestmix, Cough Cure, Bronchoforte, Atussin, Drosera, Prednisolone, Dexamethasone, Becotide, Flixotide, Ventolin, Ipratropium Bromide, Longspoon , Acupuncture etc.

Ventipulmin®

Ventilation causes the respiratory tract to dilate and the airway slime is diluted and more easily removed. This will allow the horse to breathe better: reducing the nasal discharge and coughing. Also, this medicine has an anti-allergic and mild anti-inflammatory activity beneficial to horses with hypersensitivity to dust and fungal spores. Finally, it activates the vibratory cells that hatch the mucus, which makes it easier to cure fast mucus.
This drug is usually prescribed 4 to 6 weeks.

Sputolysine®

This product dilutes the mucous in the lungs, which makes it easier to remove by coughing. Hence, the horse will not stop coughing immediately because this drug does not suppress the cough. Sputolysin® also ensures the smallest lungs do not clog, so the elasticity of the lungs do not deteriorate and the effect of antibiotics in the lungs of the horse increases. Mucous diluters are usually prescribed in acute respiratory diseases, for example viral or bacterial infections.

Acetylcysteine

This powerful slime thinner helps to break down thick sticky mucus, making it easier to cough. This drug has an anti-inflammatory effect ; It is a so-called antioxidant that captures free radicals at the horse. Free radicals are formed in the body by inflammation and natural aging.

Coughing powders

Herbal mixtures and cough powders can be used as support. Please note, that these medicines should not suppress the cough. This is not good. Coughing is beneficial because it eliminates the mucus.

Phenegritric

Phenegritric is a herb which was originally used in humans in cough problems. This herb suppresses the urge to cough. Essentially, the horse does not feel the need to cough as much. This can of course be relieving, however, you should not use it if you do not do anything about the cause.

The latter applies to all cough inhibitory agents. If there is still a bacterium in the deeper airways, the use of corticosteroids and cough suppressors is not wise.

Dampoo and eucalyptus oil should be used with caution because they may otherwise irritate too much. It seems there is a lot of mucus released, but in reality it’s all newly formed slime. Homeopathic remedies like Bronchoforte® Hoestcur®, Drosera, Allium and Belladonna can also help.

Medications can aid your horse overcome its stall allergy. The most important thing still remains: the stall climate!
