Les Sabots du Cœur
Since 2017, Les Sabots du Cœur has been bringing light, comfort, and dignity to those in their final stage of life. Active in departments such as paediatric and palliative care, the organisation supports patients and their families in creating a humane and compassionate last chapter.
At the heart of this mission is Peyo, a stallion with an extraordinary gift. In complete freedom, Peyo wanders through hospital corridors, instinctively choosing the people who need him most. With each gentle step, he brings moments of calm, comfort, and connection that words alone could never give.
But Les Sabots du Cœur offers more than these remarkable hospital visits. They also provide practical and emotional support to families and loved ones, walking alongside them in a difficult time. And when needed, they extend financial help to ease the burden, ensuring that care and compassion always come first.
It’s more than an organisation – it’s a movement of kindness, led by a horse with a heart as big as the people he serves.
Why Peyo is truly one of a kind...
In 2011, Hassen Bouchakour adopted his stallion, Peyo. At public shows, Peyo was known for his fiery temperament and for keeping his distance from people. But something remarkable happened: around a select few, his behaviour transformed. The once-spirited stallion became gentle, calm, and protective — radiating a serenity that defied his usual nature.
Hassen soon realised a striking pattern. Many of the people Peyo approached with such tenderness would pass away shortly afterwards. Through patient observation and time, Hassen understood that Peyo was instinctively drawn to those who were emotionally, physically, and psychologically vulnerable.
With the support of veterinary experts and medical professionals — including oncologists, psychiatrists, paediatricians, and researchers — Hassen and Peyo joined scientific research programmes in palliative care wards.
After four years of intensive study and the testing of over 500 horses (including Peyo’s own offspring), doctors and veterinarians discovered something extraordinary: the specific brain function that allows Peyo to detect and connect with people in such a profound way has been found only in him.
