Discover the benefits of Hartog Lucerne Mix – a high-quality roughage mix that is naturally rich in nutrients. This alfalfa-based roughage mix is carefully formulated with locally harvested alfalfa.

Lucerne is also known as the queen among roughage. And with good reason: alfalfa is naturally rich in high-quality protein, fibre, vitamins, minerals and trace elements. Combined with its naturally low sugar and starch content, alfalfa is a very suitable addition to many horses’ rations. Especially for horses that need high and consistent quality roughage.

The Hartog Lucerne Mix contains both the stalks and leaf material of alfalfa to provide all its benefits. The stalks of Lucerne provide structure and high fibre content. The leaf material of Lucerne is rich in nutrients such as naturally occurring proteins, vitamin, minerals and trace elements. The high-quality proteins in Hartog Lucerne Mix are a valuable addition for muscle building and muscle maintenance/

Hartog Lucerne Mix can be used to provide horses with extra nutrients, which has many advantages compared to, for example, increasing the amount of concentrate feed. Horses’ digestive systems are completely geared to digesting roughage.

Hartog Lucerne Mix can be mixed with concentrates/balancers to extend eating time and stimulate saliva production. This is fine for horses prone to stomach ulcers, for example. In addition, the fibres in Hartog Lucerne Mix can help support intestinal health.

The energy from Hartog Lucerne mix comes from fibre and is therefore released slowly. As a result, horses do not get hot from Hartog Lucerne mix.

Product FAQ's

Why should I feed lucerne?
You can feed alfalfa for several reasons. If you feed alfalfa with concentrate, you thereby extend the time it takes your horse to eat. Its high-fibre structure encourages chewing and thereby your horse's saliva production. In addition, because they chew better the concentrate is absorbed better. Lucerne is also naturally rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals, so for horses with increased requirements (e.g. sport horses) or horses with a sensitive stomach, it can also be a very good addition to the ration. Due to its high fibre content, Lucerne Mix is also a source of slow-release energy without making the horse nervous or hot.
How much alfalfa should I feed?
The amount of alfalfa you should feed your horse depends on why you feed it. Do you feed it to ensure that your horse spends more time on its concentrate and chews better? Then at least 250 grams (1 tablespoon) per portion is sufficient. Do you feed it to ensure your horse gets more protein and to increase the amount of slow-release energy in its ration? Then we recommend feeding 250-600 grams per 100 kg of body weight.
Does the skewed calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of alfalfa not hurt?
The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio in alfalfa is indeed skewed, about 5:1, while an ideal ratio for an adult horse is 2:1. However, this only hurts if you feed large quantities of alfalfa. I added barley straw to the Lucerne Mix to balance out the calcium/phosphorus ratio somewhat already. After all, what matters is the proportions over the whole ration and not proportions of individual components of the ration. In most cases, alfalfa is part of the ration and the calcium/phosphorus ratio is nicely balanced by the other roughage/rations. With an average ration of 10 kg of hay, 2 kg of concentrate and 2 kg of Lucerne Mix, the calcium/phosphorus ratio is still nicely balanced! If Lucerne Mix is a big part of your ration, you can balance it out with phosphorus-rich products such as cereals or bran. Want to know more about how much alfalfa suits your horse?
